Hats, Teas and History: (Grades 1-6)
It's time to call on Mrs. Waterhouse's beautiful 1884 home! Tour this gorgeous Victorian home while learning about Victorian customs and etiquette. Your visit culminates in a tea party, complete with flowered hats to wear and keep, tea cookies, and other pastry snacks. (Minimum of 5 Participants)

Try-It Hats and Teas: (Brownie Girl Scouts)
Our traditional Hats and Teas program goes green with this Girl Scouts Only program. Earn your Brownie Try-It badge while exploring the wonders of the past. Take a tour through the historic Waterhouse Residence built in 1884, learn about Victorian Etiquette, and the importance of manners today. Practice your manners at a tea party, complete with flowered hats, cookies, pastries, and a variety of teas. Receive your try-it badge and Maitland Historical Society's signature patch. (Minimum 5 scouts)

Mr. Waterhouse built his house with his bare hands. Come see how he did it! Tour the Waterhouse Residence with our of experienced docents, then take a look at Mr. Waterhouse's Carpentry Shop and finish your tour by making your very own toolbox, birdhouse, or napkin holder, similar to the way that Mr. Waterhouse did.

-Scouts gather at the Waterhouse Residence Museum for a tour
-Scouts visit the Carpentry Shop Museum to learn about the shop and the tools inside including: plane, draw knife, brace and bit (drill), hand saw, scroll saw, hammer and sanding blocks
-Scouts are shown how to use pliers and the difference between the screwdrivers and screws
-Scouts learn how to use a hammer
-Scouts build a birdhouse
Total time: 1.5-2 hours

This program is for Scouts who have previously visited the Historical Society and are familiar with the Carpentry Shop. However, a Waterhouse tour can be added for troops who have not previously visited to familiarize themselves with the museums.

Meet William Waterhouse:
Watch as Mr. Waterhouse discusses his life as a Union Soldier, as a resident of the Andersonville Prison in Georgia, and moving his family to Maitland. This one-man play is available as an addition to your Waterhouse Residence Tour or as a presentation for your school or organization. Please book this program at least 30 days in advance.

Maitland History Sleuths MHS (3rd-6th grade):
This 45-minute classroom presentation will give your students a chance to use their critical thinking skills, appreciate the modern advances we have today, and have a good time doing it! Your class will be split up into sleuthing teams. Each team will be given an object and it will be their job to deduce where it came from, what it was used for, and who might have used it. Students are encouraged to try their objects out, to handle them, and to have fun!

Carpentry Crew on the Go
This 2 hour program takes place at your school. Your students will be introduced to tool safety, proper tool handling techniques, and the life of Mr. William Waterhouse, a Central Florida carpenter, who helped to build the town of Maitland in the late 1880s. After a short presentation about Central Florida history, students will be given a chance to create a craft from wood with historic carpentry techniques used by Mr. Waterhouse.

All Maitland Historical Society Programs meet the following elementary Sunshine State Standards and FCAT factors. A more detailed description of standards utilized in specific programming is available upon request.
Sunshine State Standards: The student understands historical chronology and the historical perspective. The Student understands the history of Florida and its people.
FCAT Factors: Students use context clues to determine word meanings. Students recognize cause and effect relationships. Students identify similarities and differences among characters, settings, and events.
The Education Department of the Maitland Historical Society exists to carry out the mission of the Maitland Historical Society through engaging, interactive educational experiences for audiences of differing ages, needs, and backgrounds.
